After a trip, everyone has paid for something: one person booked the villa, another the scooties, a third picked up dinner. Paying every bill back separately means a dozen small transfers. Netting it all out first means a few — often one fewer than the number of people.
The calculator finds the true minimum. It looks for groups of people whose balances cancel out among themselves and settles each group separately, so it never uses more payments than needed. Nothing you type is saved.
Searches for the fewest payments exactly, instead of a greedy guess that can add an extra transfer.
Tap names off an expense to leave out people who weren’t there — the cab, the drinks, the second dinner.
Tick Unequal to enter exact rupees per person for any expense.
Shares always add back up to each bill, so payments clear everyone to zero.
Send the balances and payments straight to the group chat.
Works instantly in your browser. Nothing is stored.
Type the names of everyone in the group.
For each bill, enter the amount, who paid, and tap off anyone it wasn’t for.
Pay the few transfers shown over UPI and everyone is square.
For each person, add up what they paid and subtract their share of every expense they were part of. Positive means the group owes them; negative means they owe the group. Payments then move money from the people who owe to the people who are owed until everyone is at zero.
At most one fewer than the number of people with a balance. It can be lower when some people’s balances cancel out among themselves — for example if Aman owes exactly what Neha is owed — because each such group can settle separately. This calculator finds those groups exactly.
Not always. It never needs more than n − 1 payments, but it can miss a pair of balances that cancel out and use one payment more than necessary. The exact search here checks every way to split the group, which is fast for groups up to 16 people.
Possibly — that is how simplification saves payments. If Rahul owes Priya and Priya owes Aman the same amount, Rahul can pay Aman directly and Priya is out of it. Everyone still pays or receives exactly their balance.
