Splitwise Itemize Is Free — Here’s What It Doesn’t Do (and 5 Free Alternatives for Item-Wise Splits in India)
Splitwise’s new receipt-scanning Itemize feature is free. Here is what it actually does, where it falls short for Indian bills with GST and service charge, and five free ways to split a bill item by item.
Looking for the app itself? Lekhhaa: free bill split calculator — item-wise, GST & service charge — free on Android, iOS and web.
Yes — as announced in October 2026, Splitwise Itemize is free: one person scans the receipt, everyone taps the items they had, and tax and tip are shared in proportion. The catch is that one person still needs the Splitwise app, and it is built around a scanned receipt. For Indian bills you can also split item-wise free with a no-signup calculator.
What is Splitwise Itemize?
Splitwise announced Itemize around 14 October 2026. As described at launch, it works like this: someone in the group scans the restaurant receipt with the Splitwise app, the items are read off the bill, and each person taps the items they ordered. Tax and tip are then spread in proportion to what each person had, instead of being divided equally. Friends who do not have Splitwise can join through a QR code without installing the app.
That solves a real problem. The most common fight at an Indian dinner table is not about the total, it is about the friend who had two cocktails and the friend who had a dal and a roti being asked to pay the same. Item-wise splitting is the fair answer, and doing it by reading a crumpled bill aloud is miserable.
What doesn’t Itemize do?
Itemize is a good feature, and it is free. But it is worth being clear about what it is and is not, as of October 2026.
It still needs one person on Splitwise. The scan happens inside the Splitwise app, so someone at the table has to have it installed and signed in. Guests joining by QR is a genuine improvement, but the group’s record still lives in that person’s Splitwise account.
It is built around a scanned receipt. Itemize starts from the printed bill. That is perfect at a restaurant. It is less useful for the things Indian groups most often split item-wise that never come with a clean receipt — a Swiggy order split across three flatmates, a grocery run where one person bought their own snacks, or a dhaba bill that is handwritten.
It does not change what Splitwise’s free plan is. Itemize being free does not mean the rest of Splitwise’s limits went away. If your group already hits the free plan’s daily expense limit, item-wise splitting does not fix that. Our Splitwise Pro price in India page shows what Pro costs a group.
It splits the bill; it does not explain Indian tax lines. Indian restaurant bills usually carry CGST and SGST, and often a service charge on top. Proportional sharing handles that correctly if the scan reads every line right — but it is worth checking that the service charge and both GST lines were picked up, because that is where a mis-read changes everyone’s share.
The fair math: a worked ₹ example
Whichever tool you use, item-wise splitting should give the same answer. Here is a real-looking dinner for four: starters shared by everyone, then each person’s own order, with 10% service charge and 5% GST charged on food plus service.
| Item | Amount | Whose |
|---|---|---|
| Starters (paneer tikka, chilli chicken) | ₹800 | Shared by all 4 |
| Veg thali | ₹450 | Aman |
| Butter chicken + naan | ₹620 | Priya |
| Masala dosa + coffee | ₹380 | Rahul |
| Two mocktails + pasta | ₹550 | Neha |
| Subtotal | ₹2,800 | |
| Service charge 10% | ₹280 | |
| GST 5% on ₹3,080 | ₹154 | |
| Total | ₹3,234 |
Each person’s food is ₹200 of starters plus their own order: Aman ₹650, Priya ₹820, Rahul ₹580, Neha ₹750. Service and GST together add 15.5% on top of food (₹434 on ₹2,800), so every share is multiplied by 1.155.
| Person | Food | Fair share with service + GST | Equal split would be |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aman | ₹650 | ₹750.75 | ₹808.50 |
| Priya | ₹820 | ₹947.10 | ₹808.50 |
| Rahul | ₹580 | ₹669.90 | ₹808.50 |
| Neha | ₹750 | ₹866.25 | ₹808.50 |
An equal split costs Rahul about ₹139 extra. Not a fortune, but over a year of dinners it is exactly the kind of quiet unfairness that makes people stop coming. The full method, including CGST and SGST lines, is in our guide to splitting a restaurant bill with GST and service charge.
5 free ways to split a bill item-wise in India
1. Splitwise Itemize. Free as announced, scans the receipt, guests join by QR. Best when someone in the group already uses Splitwise and you are at a restaurant with a printed bill.
2. Lekhhaa’s free bill split calculator. The bill split calculator works in any browser with no signup and nothing to install. Enter the shared amount, add what each person ordered on their own — veg vs non-veg, drinks — set the service charge and GST percentages, and it gives each share exact to the paisa, so the shares always add back up to the bill. You can share the result as an image or copy it as WhatsApp text. It does not scan receipts; you type the amounts, which takes about a minute for a table of four.
3. Lekhhaa app (for running balances). If the same people eat out every week, the free Lekhhaa app supports equal, exact, percentage and item-wise splits inside a group, and carries a running balance so you settle once over UPI instead of after every meal. Friends can be added by name only — they do not need an account. No receipt scanning here either.
4. Tricount and similar link-based apps. Tricount and other link-based splitters let a group share a list without everyone signing up. They are fine for trips; check how each handles uneven per-item shares and Indian tax lines before relying on one for restaurant bills.
5. A notes app and a calculator. Honestly, for a one-off dinner, writing each person’s items in a note, adding their share of starters, then multiplying by (1 + service% + GST on top) works. It is just slow and error-prone at 11 pm.
| Option | Cost | Needs an app? | Receipt scan | GST + service handled | Running balance |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Splitwise Itemize | Free (as announced) | One person needs Splitwise; others via QR | Yes | Proportional tax/tip | Yes, in Splitwise |
| Lekhhaa bill split calculator | Free | No — any browser, no signup | No | Yes, service % and GST % | No (one-off) |
| Lekhhaa app | Free | Browser or Play Store; friends added by name | No | Yes, via item-wise split | Yes, with UPI settle-up |
| Tricount-style link apps | Free tiers | Link-based | Varies | Varies | Yes |
| Notes + calculator | Free | No | No | Manual | No |
Which should you use?
If someone in your group already lives in Splitwise, try Itemize — it is a good feature and costs nothing. If nobody wants to install anything, or the bill is a Swiggy order or a handwritten dhaba slip, the no-signup calculator is faster. And if you split with the same friends every week, the real problem is not one bill, it is the running tab — that is where a group in Lekhhaa and the who owes whom calculator save you a dozen small UPI transfers.
Whatever you pick, the rule is the same: shared things split equally, personal things go to the person who ordered them, and tax and service follow the food.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Splitwise receipt scanning free now?
As announced in October 2026, Splitwise Itemize is free: one person scans the receipt, each person taps the items they had, and tax and tip are split in proportion. Other people can join through a QR code without installing the app, though the person scanning needs Splitwise.
Do my friends need Splitwise to use Itemize?
Not all of them. As described at launch, one person scans the bill in the Splitwise app and others join through a QR code without the app. The group’s record still lives in Splitwise.
How do I split a bill item-wise without any app?
Use a no-signup calculator in your browser. Lekhhaa’s free bill split calculator takes a shared amount plus what each person ordered, applies service charge and GST in proportion, and gives each share exact to the paisa. You can share the result on WhatsApp as text or an image.
How should GST and service charge be split item-wise?
In proportion to each person’s food. Add service charge on the food subtotal, then GST on food plus service, and multiply each person’s food by the same factor. With 10% service and 5% GST, every share is food × 1.155.
Does Lekhhaa scan receipts for item-wise splits?
No. Lekhhaa’s calculator and app split item-wise from amounts you type in. If receipt scanning is the feature you want, Splitwise Itemize does that; Lekhhaa’s edge is that nobody has to install or sign up to use the calculator.
Is item-wise splitting really worth it over an equal split?
For one dinner the difference is usually ₹100–200 a person. Over months of eating out with the same group it adds up, and it is the most common source of resentment — the friend who had one dosa paying for someone else’s cocktails.
